RACE PREVIEW: Disney Marathon / Half Marathon

Walt Disney World will be hosting its annual endurance race events this coming weekend on January 10 and 11th, 2009. The Walt Disney Marathon (held on Sunday) is the only "professional grade" marathon event in the Orlando area, and given its storied location, this race is easily one of the most hyped races in the country.

Although the course is flat, it isn't necessarily the fastest given the twists and turns runners must negotiate as they wind their way through the various Disney parks and themed properties. But unbeknownst to first time Disney patrons, this race isn't nearly as park specific as one would believe. Twenty six miles is a lot of territory to cover, and even within the capacious grounds comprising Walt Disney World Resort, runners will still find themselves running endless connecting highways, overpasses and vast parking lots. And given the astronomical $125 marathon ($115 half marathon) entry fee, these races are a lot more Goofy than Mickey.

That said, the Disney Marathon is entertaining, and the people watching is almost Halloween worthy (in a family friendly sort of way). Where else can you see a 200 pound guy from Buffalo run a marathon in a Tinkerbell tutu? Since Disney is the only major marathon event in Central Florida, the insane price isn't so bad when you consider the absence of major marathon travel expenses. Hopefully, our participating YMCARunners will benefit from some of that Disney magic to bring home some marathon PR's.

YMCARunners SMASH PR's at OUC HALF

Christmas came a few weeks early for many of our YMCARunners at the OUC Half Marathon this weekend. Despite a late race start and warmer than expected temperatures, the OUC Half turned out to be one of the most successful events ever for our club. Scores of old PR's were tossed out like last year's Christmas wrapping, and many of our members brought home plenty of shiny hardware to place under the tree.

It could be the magic of the season, last weekend's binge or the promise of Naughty Nog (1 part Myers, 1 part Bailey's, 1 part Kalua, 3 parts Nog), but this much is certain: SOMETHING pushed the YMCA Runners to a new level. We were helped along by a course that featured fewer kinks and bricks than last year, and OUC avoided the tangled web of gnarled streets around Lake Davis altogether. And let's not forget that the dreaded Duckett Horibilus was nowhere to be found.

The results were spectacular. Pat Marshall led the club with a fourth place overall finish that was two minutes ahead of his 2006 overall winning time. Teresa Calio captured her umpteenth Masters Champion award, Hulya Atli finally broke 1:30 for the women, and David Dix showed he was sub-3 marathon worthy with a 1:26 and change...and all in PR times. The holiday cheer was not limited to the half marathon runners, as Dinah Philips pulled out a PR in the 5k with Carolyn Lyon taking Second Overall for the quick ladies.

Here's the recap (partial...email us if you're not on here or if we're missing a PR):
